Prep - Year 6

Starting school is an exciting milestone — a time when children begin to explore, discover, and grow in a world of new learning and friendships. At Myrtleford P12 College, we believe that every child’s journey begins with a strong sense of belonging.

Our Prep to Year 6 program nurtures curiosity, confidence, and kindness within a supportive school family and wider community. Together, we create a safe and caring environment where students are encouraged to do their best, develop a love of learning, and feel connected to something bigger than themselves.

College values

At Myrtleford P-12 College, our values guide everything we do and shape the kind of community we strive to be.

We show Respect by valuing ourselves, others, and our environment.

We demonstrate Responsibility by taking ownership of our actions and learning.

We act as Responsible Community Members by contributing positively to our school and the wider community, showing care and empathy for those around us.

And we prioritise Safety by making choices that protect and support everyone’s wellbeing.

Together, these values create a learning environment where every student can thrive, feel valued, and reach their full potential.

Learning in Prep - Year 6

At Myrtleford P–12 College, our teaching is grounded in the belief that all students are capable of making meaningful progress when provided with high-quality, evidence-based instruction.

Our approach to learning is centred on Explicit Instruction and the careful analysis of individual student achievement to ensure every learner receives the targeted support they need.

English

In English, students participate in daily Orton–Gillingham lessons, focusing on synthetic phonics, syllabification, and morphology to develop fluent word decoding and spelling skills. Alongside this, Literature Studies provide rich opportunities to explore vocabulary, themes, character traits, reasoning skills, and genre through both picture books in the younger years  and novel studies for older students.

Our Writing program combines instruction at the micro level; sentence structure and grammar, with the macro level of text organisation and purpose. We use the evidence based Self-Regulated Strategy Development (SRSD) framework to explicitly teach students how to plan, write, and edit a range of text types effectively.

Developing oral language skills is also a vital part of our practice. We explicitly teach students to be attentive listeners, to understand and use new vocabulary, and to express their ideas clearly and confidently.

Through these evidence-based practices, Myrtleford P–12 College nurtures capable, curious, and confident communicators who are well prepared for lifelong learning.

Mathematics

At Myrtleford P-12 College, we are committed to developing confident, capable and critical mathematical thinkers. Our Mathematics program provides a balanced and sequential approach from Foundation to Year 6, ensuring students build strong essential skills while also learning to apply their knowledge in meaningful, real-world contexts.

Students develop core numeracy skills through explicit instruction, hands-on learning and purposeful practice. Key learning areas include:

  • Counting and number sense
  • Place value understanding
  • Addition, subtraction, multiplication and division strategies

To support conceptual development, we utilize the CRA model (Concrete–Representational–Abstract). Students begin with concrete materials, move to visual representations, and finally transition to abstract symbols and algorithms. This approach supports deeper understanding, helps students make meaningful connections between concepts, and builds their confidence as mathematical thinkers.

Humanities and Science

Our Humanities and Science programs are based on the Victorian Curriculum 2.0.

In Humanities, students explore Geography, History, Civics and Citizenship, and Economics and Business.

In Science, they investigate Physical, Biological, Chemical, and Earth and Space Sciences.

Unit topics are taught on a two-year cycle, with different areas of study covered in odd and even years to ensure students experience the full range of learning opportunities.

Health and Wellbeing

Our Health and Wellbeing program covers the Curriculum Areas of Personal, Social and Community Health as well as the Personal and Social Capability. It incorporates the Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships resource as well as eSafety.

Students learn about emotional regulation and how it connects to overall wellbeing, explore ways to recognise their body’s signals (interoception), identify the things that might “spark” or “trigger” their feelings, and discover a range of strategies and tools to help them manage their emotions and support their own wellbeing.

School Readiness and Transition

Starting school is a significant milestone for every child and their family, and at Myrtleford P–12 College, we are committed to making this transition a positive and supported experience.

We recognise that every child begins school with unique strengths, experiences, and needs. Our intentional Prep Transition Program is designed to help children feel confident, connected, and ready to learn from day one.

Through our School Readiness sessions, transition visits, parent information sessions, and Grade 6 Buddy Program, families are welcomed into our community and supported to understand school routines, expectations, and learning approaches. The Buddy Program pairs new students with older peers who help guide, support, and encourage them as they settle into their first year of school.

These opportunities help children build familiarity with their new environment, meet teachers and classmates, and develop a sense of belonging before their first official day. Our goal is to ensure that every child and their family feels recognised, valued, and ready to begin their learning journey at Myrtleford P–12 College with confidence and excitement.

Student Leadership

At Myrtleford P12 College, student leadership provides opportunities for students to develop confidence, responsibility, and a sense of pride in their school community.

Our student leaders play an important role in representing the voices of their peers and contributing to the positive culture of the College.

School Captains lead by example, promoting our College Values and supporting whole-school events.

Sport Captains encourage participation, teamwork, and school spirit through sporting activities and competitions.

Library Leaders foster a love of reading and help maintain an engaging and welcoming library space, while Art Leaders support creativity across the school by assisting with displays and art-based projects.

Our Prep Buddy Leaders develop positive relationships between the younger and older children, enhancing the sense of belonging within our friendly and supportive school community.

The Student Representative Council (SRC) provides another key avenue for student voice and leadership. SRC members represent their classes and work collaboratively to bring forward ideas, plan events, and take action on initiatives that make our school a better place. They help strengthen communication between students and staff and play an active role in promoting inclusion, respect, and a sense of belonging across the College. Together, all our student leaders model respect, initiative, and collaboration, helping make our school a supportive and inspiring place to learn.
