Intergenerational Practice Programs at MP12 College

For the past 10 years, School Nurse Rosemary Dax has fostered strong partnerships between MP12 College and our local aged care providers, Mercy Care – Myrtleford Lodge and Barwidgee Lodge, Alpine Health. These intergenerational programs connect people across the age span, creating rich, meaningful relationships that strengthen our entire community.

Benefits for Students

  • Increased empathy, resilience, and respect for others
  • A stronger sense of purpose, belonging, and community connection
  • Anecdotal improvements in school attendance and engagement

Benefits for Aged Care Residents

  • Renewed joy and a strengthened sense of value and contribution
  • Reduced feelings of isolation and loneliness
  • Weekly visits frequently described as the “highlight of the week”

Students from Foundation to Year 10 have participated in these programs, building positive relationships with older members of our community. Over the past three years, the initiative has expanded further through an intergenerational playgroup facilitated by Rosemary and Year 8 students. Held each Monday morning at Mercy Care – Myrtleford Lodge, the playgroup welcomes local families to participate alongside our elder friends, creating opportunities for connection, learning, and shared experiences across generations.

Together we do better.
